Author Visits & Fundraisers

Choose a meaningful theme for your classroom, assembly, or community event.

Jennifer letting the kids get up close and personal with one of her books.
THE ENTREPRENEURIAL SPIRIT  I love to introduce students to the wacky entrepreneur Mr. McKluskie, as he opens the town’s very first Mars Travel Agency. This book can invite discussions about not only leisure space travel as a reality, but also the many elements of starting and running a business. What are the various tasks Mr. McKluskie must do as the owner? How does he advertise? How does he make more money once his first customers get to Mars? We can even workshop a classroom’s fresh business idea as an exercise in both brainstorming and practical real life application.

FROM POEM TO BOOK

Many kids don’t realize that writing a book can be as simple as writing a poem! Where do you start? What makes a good idea for a poem that will be turned into a book? Does it have to be truly possible or can it make no sense at all? Can you make up words? There’s so much to explore in a discussion of process and creativity with Mr. McKluskie’s Mars Travel Agency as our model.  A half-day classroom workshop makes a great kick off to your writing curriculum and your library will receive a gift copy of the book so that students can “go to Mars” long after I’ve left the building.

AFRICAN SAFARI IN THE CLASSROOM

Let me take your classroom or adventure club on a safari of sorts – we’ll visit Kenya, Tanzania and South Africa through the pages of Africa Dreaming. We will talk about traveling to distant lands – what is the same and what can be different when we travel? What words in Swahili might we learn before we go? What are some of the many challenges wildlife on our planet are facing – habitat loss? War? Climate change? And how can we help them from where we live? Each classroom receives a gift copy of Africa Dreaming and a Jambo Jennifer Wildlife Puzzle.

PHOTOGRAPHY AS A CAREER

What are the many ways you can use a camera to make a living? How do you learn to use such a complicated piece of equipment? And what makes a good photograph? How do you make a book with your photos? How do you make a line of puzzles and what goes into running that business? This is a great talk for teens who enjoy photography whether through art class or the yearbook staff. But it can also be tailored to younger students through the window of Africa Dreaming. Pre-visit endeavors such as an “animal photo challenge” – even with a pet goldfish! – can be done along with a show and tell/critique session from a pro. Your students can also look at, hold, and even operate the equipment I brought to Africa to capture the images in the book and we’ll have a little fun with Jambo Jennifer Puzzles.

Any of these themes are possible or I can customize an approach that better suits your classroom goals. My fees vary depending on the location and whether a Book & Puzzle Preorder is an option for me. In many cases if you allow a preorder sale before my visit, all speaking fees are waived. Modest travel fees may apply depending on your location. I travel nationwide.
